Back To School Letter - September 2025

Dear Toronto-Danforth Resident,
I am Sara Ehrhardt, your elected public school board trustee.
I was elected to represent our community at the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) in support of public education for 2022-2026
Everyone should be welcome at the TDSB, including all children of all backgrounds and abilities, Adult learners and English as a Second Language (ESL) learners.

As the 2025-26 school year gets underway, I would like to highlight the following:
-
The TDSB offers a wide range of Adult General Interest and Seniors Daytime classes through the Learn4Life program. These classes provide an excellent opportunity to learn new skills, stay active, and connect with others in our community. Visit learn4life.ca for more.
-
The TDSB also offers affordable International languages programs to both TDSB and non-TDSB students from kindergarten to grade 8, you can find more information here.
-
School boards are required to have special education programs and services in place. You can find more information here.
-
The TDSB has mental health resources tailored to students, parents, and caregivers available online at tdsb.on.ca/MHWB
-
I encourage best practices to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and other respiratory illnesses. This includes staying home from school when sick, wearing a well-fitted mask in crowded settings, and keeping up to date on vaccinations. More information is available here.
-
For school security issues, please contact your school directly. Outside of school hours, contact the TDSB security operation centre at 416-395-4620

Provincial Supervision
-
Over the summer the provincial government took the TDSB under supervision - which means the province took away our community’s representation and voting power at the school board. The province is now paying an appointed person named Rohit Gupta to make decisions instead of the people Toronto residents elected.
-
I joined several trustees in writing to the Ontario Ombudsman asking for intervention to ensure TDSB Supervisor Rohit Gupta fulfils obligations to transparency and accountability to Toronto’s students, families and communities.
-
Ombudsman Ontario is an independent officer that helps keep government and public services accountable and whose office is vital to democracy. You can find out more at www.ombudsman.on.ca/
-
-
If you are as frustrated as I am about the provincial takeover of our schools you can find ideas for getting involved and taking action here.
Despite supervision I don’t intend to stop serving our community or advocating for our schools. School board trustees are not full-time positions in Ontario, and as of June 2025, TDSB trustees are no longer receiving an honourarium. Beyond serving as an elected Trustee, I work full-time and am a parent of a school-age child. I seek to respond to messages received within one week. I invite you to subscribe for community updates and information on advocacy to take back our schools.
